Anxiety doesn’t always look like panic

Anxiety does not always look like panic. For many people it looks like a mind that will not rest. You might recognize some of this:

  • Running through what-ifs long after everyone else is asleep
  • A tight chest, a restless body, or a knot in your stomach you cannot explain
  • Putting off calls, emails, or gatherings because they feel like too much
  • A fear of failure that makes ordinary decisions feel heavy
  • Overwhelm or burnout, and the sense that you are running on empty

You do not need a diagnosis to reach out. If you are not sure it is “bad enough” for counseling, that doubt is common, and worth saying out loud.

What we do with the worry, together

This is time set aside to understand your anxiety: where it shows up, what feeds it, and how you have been coping. Together you build a treatment plan around your needs and goals. Part of the work is practical coping strategies for between sessions. Part is slower: processing what lies underneath the worry.

Anxiety can also show up alongside depression, trauma, performance pressure, self-doubt, a hard life transition, or unhealthy coping. Your counselor will be honest with you, without sugarcoating, at a pace that feels right for you.

If you’ve prayed about it and still worry

If you feel ashamed that you still worry after praying about it, you can say so here and be met with compassion instead of judgment. You can also leave faith out and keep your sessions on clinical goals. Faith is never imposed, and it is never a substitute for clinical treatment. The Christian counseling page explains more about how faith works at Ezra.

Licensed counselors, and your doctor for medication

Ezra’s counselors are licensed clinicians, or pre-licensed therapists working under clinical supervision. This is psychotherapy. It is not Bible study, spiritual direction, or advice to simply trust more. Ezra provides counseling, not medication management. If you are taking or considering medication, your doctor is the right person to ask, and counseling does not replace medical care.

How Ezra counselors work with anxiety

Your counselor chooses methods based on how anxiety shows up for you. Counselors at Ezra work with approaches that include these, and each profile lists what that counselor offers:

Somatic Therapy

Anxiety often lives in the body. Somatic work helps you notice those signals and settle them.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

A structured therapy for processing distressing memories that still intrude on the present.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

An attachment-based approach to the emotions behind your reactions in close relationships.

Your counselor will explain what they suggest and why. Outcomes vary from person to person.

For adults. Teens have their own page.

This page is for adults. If you are under 18, or you are a parent looking for help for a child or teen, see anxiety and depression counseling for children and teens. If anxiety is putting pressure on a relationship, couples and marriage counseling may be the better place to start. You can also read about individual counseling more broadly.

Questions people ask about anxiety counseling

Is it anxiety, or just stress?

You do not have to sort that out first. If stress is costing you sleep, focus, or peace, that is reason enough to talk.

Can I do EMDR by video?

Ask about it when you reach out. EMDR by video depends on the counselor, and your counselor can talk with you about whether it suits the work you have in mind.

Do you prescribe medication?

Ezra provides counseling, not medication management. If you are taking or considering medication, your doctor is the right person to ask. Counseling does not replace medical care.

Do I have to be a Christian?

No. Your faith is welcome, but you do not have to be a Christian to come, and you can keep your sessions on clinical goals.

Is this real therapy?

Yes. Your counselor is a licensed clinician, or a pre-licensed therapist working under clinical supervision.

What does counseling cost, and do you take insurance?

Fees vary by counselor. Current payment and insurance information is on the Providers & Policies page.

You don’t have to calm down first

You do not have to calm down first or explain it perfectly. You only need to take the next step.

If you are in crisis, call or text 988. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.
